Tips for Living a Healthy Life
Look for ways you can add exercise to your everyday life - Take the stairs rather than the elevator. Walk your dog; run with your kids; play sports with your friends, mow the lawn. If you are moving you are getting exercise and fitness, some is better than then. It doesn’t have to be all at once either; small steps throughout the day can be more than a 1 hour workout at the gym! Not to say that you shouldn’t find the time to get a great workout in, just make sure you do more when you can, rather than taking the easy, non-exercise way out.
Slice the Fat Away - Avoid fast food, anything deep fried, and fatty meat that are high in Saturated fats. You should also cut back on dairy products high in fat, like cheese butter. Try low fat alternatives for all you’re your dairy needs. There are low fat or no fat solutions for most high fat foods on the market today.Just think before you eat, even better think before you buy, if you fill your house with low fat healthy foods then you will find it way easier to stay on track.
Quit Smoking - I think we all know this by now, but smoking is not good for you…no really. Actually it’s quite surprising because everyone knows how bad smoking is for you, but so many people are still smoking their lives shorter every day. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? Everyone on screen seems to be smoking and it gives our youth the wrong impression of what is cool. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarettes contain nicotine--a powerfully addictive substance. Three-quarters of young people who use tobacco daily continue to do so because they find it hard to quit. Tobacco can kill you. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in this country. More than 400,000 Americans die from tobacco-related causes each year, and most of them began using tobacco before the age of 18.
Cut Back on Stress - Everyone’s lives have some level of stress in them and it’s impossible to cut it all out. But you can do things that help you relax, which will help relieve some of the pain of your daily stresses. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Try to avoid events or people that you know will cause you stress.
Be positive! - The connection between thinking happy and being healthier cannot be ignored. Studies show that people who are more positive about themselves and about their lives are generally healthier. The brain affects the body.
Genetics vs. Your Health - There is a powerful link between genetics and health. If your parents and grandparents lived long healthy lives the odds are definitely in your favor to do the same. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn't mean you cannot counteract the genetic pool handed you. Just remember to eat well, exercise, and be positive and good health will never be too far away.
