As a diet that has been around for over 20 years, the Cambridge Diet is still considered a successful way to drop pounds quickly. The main idea of this diet is to reap the weight loss benefits of being on a liquid diet, but still consuming a proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, and additional daily essentials in order to prevent muscle mass loss or feeling like you’re starving. This diet offers individuals 3 daily servings of Cambridge Diet shakes, which contain either 30 or 50 grams of protein.

The Cambridge Diet may be tailored to an individual’s needs based on the amount of weight loss one is looking for. There are four programs found within the Cambridge Diet, each offering different levels of caloric intake and welcome switches between liquid or solid foods.

The “Fast Track” program requires that an individual consume 3-4 servings of Cambridge Diet shakes without consuming any additional foods. For some, this program may be a little intense, but also works great for those who want to drop a few pounds quickly.

The “Alternate” program offers more choices. The dieter consumes the Cambridge shakes one day. The next day, the dieter consumes the recommended number of shakes with an additional 400-800 calorie intake of low fat foods. This program allows for individuals to keep with the program longer, since they are alternating between liquid shakes and low-calorie foods.

The “Regular” program allows for individuals to consume a Cambridge shake 15 to 20 minutes before eating a low fat meal.

The final program, “Regular 2” is designed for individuals to consume 3 servings of the shakes, with the addition of one low calorie meal per day, not exceeding more than 400-800 calories. (The Cambridge Diet recommends that no more than 400-800 calories each day be consumed from food regardless of which program is chosen).

Every diet has its pros and cons, and the Cambridge Diet is no exception. While the advantages to the various programs include intake of essential daily nutrients and success rates while being on the diet, the cons are the same as with any liquid diet. The limited amount of calories may be troublesome for some dieters, causing lack of energy. Most dieters feel hungry when on a liquid diet, and have more difficulty resisting temptation.

The cost of the Cambridge Diet varies depending on the program an individual decides to take. There are also two types of shakes within the diet plan; the Original or Food for Life. The Food for life shakes are improved versions of the Original, offering 100% of the Daily Allowance of vitamins and minerals, as well as increased amounts of protein, carbohydrates and fat while still staying at roughly 140 calories per shake. A case of Food for Life shakes costs on average $140.00 for 15 servings, and the Original shakes cost $160.00 for 21 servings.
