  • First, you need to prepare yourself for long time training. You wont' be ready for a marathon over night or in a week. You should train a year before the marathon and you should run in a few shorter races like a 5k or 10k run before you do the real big one. Conditionig yourself is important and so is knowing your limits and respecting them. The four building blocks of marathon training include base mileage, build your weekly mileage over  time by running 3 to 5 times per week. The long run. Do a run every 7 - 10 days so your body can graudally adjust to long distances. Build up speed. Practice intervals and tempo runs to increase your cardio capacity. Rest and recovery is important.Adequate rest helps prevent injuries and mental burnout. Also, make sure that when  you do run you keep hydrated. It's also important that you eat properly so you have the right amount of fuel.
