Home Community Question & Answers Prescription Diet Pills Does Belviq work on the central nervous system like phentermine?

  • Belviq controls appetite by activating brain receptors for serotonin. This is a neurotransmitter that triggers feelings of satiety and satisfaction. It plays a role in mood but according the researchers behind the drug, unlike medications that affect serotonin for depression or other mental/mood disoerders, Belviq only affects appetite.

It is considered to be a moderate stimulant of the central nervous system that inhibits food cravings. I don't think it's as potent a central nervous system stimulate as phentermine and tenuate, etc. Becuase I think it just control appetie, I don't think it boosts energy.

That being said, it is still meant to be taken with a calorie-controlled diet and exercise. Also, if you don't lose at least 5% of your weight within 12 weeks, you're not supposed to keep using this medication becuae it is unlikely to work for you in a meaningful way by this point.
