Default Real Cinnamon

I've heard that not all cinnamon is created equal. Is this true? If so, how do I know if I'm getting the best cinnamon and does this mean that other cinnamons aren't beneficial for your health?

Nope, cinnamon isn't just cinnamon...that would be too easy haha. I think the one you want to look for is ceylon cinnamon, which isn't the cinnamon that is sold in bulk or in the containers in most grocery stores. I think ceylon has health benefits that typical cinnamon doesn't.

I think there is cassius (sp?) cinnamon, too. I don't remember if it is this one or ceylone cinnamon that's supposed to be better for you...

Yeah, I think cassia is the better cinnamon. I think it's superior to ceylon but I think both are better, health-wise, than the typical cinnamon that you buy in stores.

Wow, really? Geeze, I didn't even know there were several varieties of cinnamon. Can you just get these at your local health store? I'm assuming the typical grocery story doesn't have them.

Actually, most health experts recommend ceylon cinnamon for people looking for the best cinnamon. It's native to Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Brazil, India and the Caribbean. If you're looking buy ceylon cinnamon, I would recommend going to a health food store. Look for cinnamon that is a dark tan brown color, is fragile and easily breaks (stick form), tastes delicate and sweet with notes of clove. Also, expect for this type of cinnamon to be a lot more expensive than the regular stuff.
