Default Do it because you want to

Are you losing weight for the right reasons? Are you losing weight for yourself or are your motivations because someone else wants you to do it? It's important to ask yourself these questions:

Why do I want to lose weight?
Why do I need to lose weight?

If your answers have nothing to do with you, you might want to assess new goals and motivations. You can't lose weight simply because someone else wants you too. If you want to make healthy decisions for your body it needs to come from a healthy choice and a choice over which you have full control.

I thought about your tip Beth and I'm glad to say that I'm losing weight only for me. I honestly don't care what other people think of my size because whether they like it or not, I'm the one who has to live in my body so I might as well make it a body I want to live in, you know?

But, yeah, weight loss really won't work for the long-term if you aren't losing weight on your own terms and for your own reasons.

Exactly Lia. We have a hard enough time living up to our own standards, when we try to live up to the standards of others, too, achieving anything seems impossible!

Exactly Bethie It gets so exhausting to live up to the standards of others. It makes us more critical of ourselves as well. I'm glad you agree :)

This is good advice...and not to be argumentative...but what about people who need to lose weight but who don't want to? How do you motivate them to want to take action to make the healthy change their body needs? For some of these people, I imagine that it is the other people in their lives who motivate them to make the change, not themselves.

I imagine you're probably right. I know that self-motivation doesn't work for everyone, but for those that it does work for, it's important that they know their own goals and not just listen to what others have to say. However, for people who require outside motivation, I would suggest talking to someone who provides realistic motivation and not someone who promotes trying to look like a supermodel (if you know what I mean).
