Question Will I naturally gain weight as I age

Is it normal to gain weight as I age and my body changes? If so, how much weight is it normal to gain and when should i be considering that it's too much?

I don't know if it's normal to gain weight as you age but I will say that it's common and the reason simply is because our metabolism naturally slows down as we age so it's easier to gain weight where we didn't before. That said, I don't think you should be putting on weight at any age unless your doctor tells you you should for your health (e.g. you're underweight, etc.)

It's normal to gain weight only because your metabolism slows down as you age but this doesn't mean that it's necessarily okay to gain weight. I would recommend using your BMI as a guide as to what is a healthy weight for your gender, age and height.

I agree that you will naturally gain weight as you age because your metabolism slows down, but that being said, I don't think at any point in your life it is safe or healthy to be overweight. Any time you weigh more than you should you increase your risk of disease and you are harder on your body as a whole. After all, the more you weigh, the more stress and strain you are placing on your joints. Always try to stay in a health BMI zone and try to maintain the same weight. If you're not sure what your weight should be for your age, size, gender, height, lifestyle, etc. find out from your doctor.

Yeah. I guess this makes the most sense. I just think when people get older and they look super thin that they look worse than those who have a bit of weight on their bones. I mean, I'm not saying that someone should be really overweight or obese, I know that's not healthy at any age. I guess as you get older and your metabolism slows down this just means you have to work extra harder to keep your weight under control.

I agree. Thin old people don't look great. I'm not saying people should look fat or anything, but I think we all try aiming to be slimmer than we need to be (and should be). Just focus on being healthy, try not too think too much about the scale - no matter your age (or what the media tells you)

As we age, our metabolism slows down. I am experiencing this also. Even if I manage my diet, I'm having difficulties to reduce my weight.

I hear you kspelt. I'm having a really hard time with my weight gain right now. I find it's so easy to put weight on now and really hard to keep it off, something I once never struggled to do. I mean, I was never really "skinny" but I was never as big as I am now and I found it a lot easier to manage my weight in my twenties and thirties...
