Nearly the perfect place
I’ve had a lot of friends recommend cal a vie to me so when I decided to go on a vacation for 2, this was the choice that I made. I wanted to be able to enjoy the lap of luxury but not have to end up being unhealthy as a result of it. Since I am not exactly in the greatest shape (working on it!), I didn’t really know if I would be up to the exercise component that it has, but I decided to go for it anyway. I didn’t really know what to expect when I got there. My friends had talked a lot about it, but at the same time, I only got bits and pieces and not an idea of a whole experience. But it’s really designed in a great way so that you feel comfortable the moment that you get there. I certainly did. I didn’t like the stairs that I had to take to get to my room, but I found out that there’s actually another way to get there that involves walking up a driveway instead of hiking up the stairs. Usually that’s not too bad but after a day of working out, I’m just too tired. I’m hoping to go back one day and not have an issue with that. I stayed in a king suite (room 32) that had a living room. It was stunning and I couldn’t have been happier with it. I found it exciting, at first, that my clothes were even provided. They have champion shorts and sweat suits, jackets, and ponchos in grey. I was under the impression that everybody would be wearing them, but I was disappointed to find out that my companion and I were the only ones who did. I felt like a complete loser and started having high school flashbacks from it haha. Except for the first day I wore my own fitness gear and felt a lot better in general. I liked that the spa does the laundry anyway so it doesn’t matter if you wear what’s there or if you wear what you’ve packed. The schedule is provided right at the start, because you meet the person who builds it from you right at the start. You get your schedule each day at breakfast. I was even given fanny packs or bags every day that had everything that I would need, based on my schedule, which was great. It was all the benefits of the activities on the schedule, without having to do any of the planning, myself. Since I’m not terribly experienced when it comes to a lot of the different kinds of workouts, I liked that I could get my own personal instructor to learn at the start. The instructions were great and I didn’t feel like I was putting myself at risk of getting hurt by trying something new. The spa, itself was amazing – just the luxury I’d been hoping to have when I booked the vacation. The food was great and there was lots of it. I actually ate more than I normally would but it was all healthy stuff and I was so active that I didn’t have to feel guilty about it. It was a little more expensive than I would have liked, but other than that I have to say that it was a very good experience. If there is a place that is perfect, then cal a vie is right next door to it.
I stayed at Cal a vie spa for four nights a few months ago with a large group and honestly, they blew my hair back. I’ve never experienced anything so remarkable at any place I’ve ever stayed. As soon as we got there it was like we were transported over to some place in France or Italy like Provence or Tuscany or one of those places that I’ve seen on tv that are really old school but still great for it. The fitness facilities were awesome and the classes were seriously top notch. It was a great way to unwind in the spa after using the exercise stuff all morning long. You really feel like you earn your spa treatments but in a good way. It’s not like you put yourself through torture and then finally relax. It’s like you put in a lot of effort and you know that you’re doing something very good for yourself and then you are rewarded even further by letting yourself feel amazing. Even though they give you a schedule, you can still make some changes because the staff are really available and flexible. They really obviously want things to work out for you and for you to be as happy as you can be throughout the whole time. If you do stick to the schedule that they give you, there are these “rest and relaxation” times that are worked in and it’s good for sitting around by the pool or checking out the little shop or just walking around the grounds and feeling good because your’e there and not at work haha. Right from the beginning you tell the staff how much in calories you are hoping to eat every day. Even though some of us picked lower calories than we usually eat (since this was a weight loss trip), there wasn’t one of us who found ourselves hungry. The food was really good. They didn’t scrimp on flavor to make sure that the calorie budget was met. I used one of my trips ot the store to buy the cookbook. I havne’t made anything from it yet, but now that I just remembered that I have it, I probably will. The staff was insanely nice, but they weren’t always in your face, either. The only thing I’d say about cal a vie is that it’s not even close to cheap. I got a discount and it was still above what my usual price range would be. Still, for a once in a lifetime experience, it was sure the best thing that I’ve ever gone through. Plus it’s nuts that it can be that luxurious and still be healthy and help with losing weight. If that’s what dieting felt like normally, people would be fighting each other to be able to start!

My wife and I went to the cal-a-vie spa in 2009 (March) and stayed for 4 nights in the hotel with the package for that length of time. I can see how this is the perfect resort for either couples or people who want to get away and have some quiet time alone to relax. Though the main focus of the health spa was fitness, I was still able to just take it easy by taking the mind and body classes instead of things that are more intense. The room itself was absolutely beautiful and almost full the entire time that I was there. I wasn’t thrilled with my first room because even though I specified at the time of my reservation that I have a hard time walking, they still put me in a room where I had to walk up a hill to get to absolutely everything. But when I brought this to their attention, they did manage to move me, even with the limitations of the heavily booked hotel. I was put in a room that was very close to the restaurant and the spa, so that solved all of my problems. I thought it was interesting that workout clothes (tshirt, shorts, pants) are provided, but as they were not to my taste, I’m glad I brought my own. My wife went on the 6am hikes at the start of every day while I enjoyed a nice sleep. There were lots of different tai chi, yoga, and pilates classes that I could take before she returned. The spa treatments that started at 11am were wonderful. The food was also extremely flavorful and healthy. You get to choose your calorie plan, too, so you don’t have to worry about blowing your diet just because you’re eating very well. If you get hungry between meals, they have some healthy items like apples to snack on. If you are hooked on your cell phone, you won’t be thrilled with the reception, except on the bridge that takes you to the fitness building. It is a wonderful place to get healthy, get away, and just relax.
