  • Diet Sabotage

I have been dieting for what seems like forever, but recently I've been really making an effort. I try to prepare healthy meals for dinner and when I go out to eat I order a salad. A funny thing though I have noticed is that my boyfriend seems to by trying to sabotage my diet. Every time I order a salad at a restaurant he complains and tells me to loosen up and he does the same thing when I eat less or healthier at dinner. I'm not sure what his problem is. Perhaps it's like the saying "misery loves company", but in this case it's being overweight instead of misery. My boyfriend is not a thin guy and could certainly lose some weight, but I love him no matter what his size. So why do you think he's acting this way and do you think he'll come around?

Helen, what you describe is a common problem for couples I think. If one person decides to lose weight and the other doesn't want any part of it then there is going to be an adjustment period. Your boyfriend should be supportive, that's the bottom line. Even if he doesn't want to get in better shape, he should still support you in that. Maybe he's suffering from low self-esteem and worries that if you become thinner and healthier some thinner and healthier guy is going to come along and sweep you off your feet. Maybe also, watching you get healthier is a constant reminder of what he should be doing and that bugs him. Either way, I hope you guys find a way to grow together.
