Prescription diet pills are available in many different forms, depending on what the patient and doctor feel will be most effective in that unique weight loss circumstance, and the ingredients contained within the formula of the drug.

The two most common forms of prescription diet pills are appetite suppressants and fat blockers, though those are far from the only types of medications available.

Common Types of Prescription Diet Pills

Appetite suppressants, such as Phentermine (Adipex, Ionamin), sibutramine (Meridia), and Phendimetrazine (Bontril), work by affecting a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This is the part of the brain that is responsible for creating the sensation of being hungry or full. By changing the re-uptake of chemicals in that part of the brain called norepinephrine and serotonin, it is also possible to give a feeling of being satisfied by a meal, even if a smaller amount of food is consumed. When these prescription diet pills are used, it is much easier for a dieter to eat less food without experiencing the discomfort usually associated with that effort.

On the other hand, fat blocker prescription diet pills, such as orlistat (Xenical), work by stopping an enzyme known as lipase from performing its task. When food containing fats is consumed, what will usually happen is that the lipase enzyme will be released so that the fats can be broken down into small enough molecules that they can be absorbed into the body so that they can be used as energy or stored as fat in the body. When the lipase is blocked, less fat can be absorbed into the body and the remainder moves through and is excreted with the rest of the body’s waste in bowel movements.

Taking Prescription Diet Pills Properly

Though many prescription diet pills are highly effective when used properly, many do not simply cause pounds to melt away simply by popping a capsule or tablet. Instead, they are generally prescribed as a part of a complete weight loss program that involves a change in lifestyle. These lifestyle changes typically involve a healthy, portion-controlled diet, and a proper daily exercise routine. The doctor will help to design these lifestyle changes when the drug is prescribed, and the assistance of a nutritionist, dietitian, and/or personal trainer may also be recommended.

This way, the proper habits will have been established so that the weight can continue to be lost even after the prescription diet pills are no longer being used. Then, when the goal weight is achieved, the dieter will be able to maintain that healthy weight without gaining it back.

when you’re considering prescription diet pills online, make sure that you read the reviews that are there so that you know if you can trust the pharmacy and so that you can be sure that you are ready for the drug. You might find you want a second appointment with your doctor to discuss the side effects for some.

Most of these pills are just too strong so while you might lose weight, you’re just asking for side effects.

Some of these pills are highly effective, but they also come with some serious side effects. The trick is to make sure that the good effects are so great that they make the bad effects worth it.

Remember that just because you’re prescribed a pill, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to take part in your own weight loss. For one thing, you should read a lot of reviews before filling your prescription, so that you have a better idea of what you’re getting yourself into and whether or not you do want to fill it or if you should talk to your doctor about something better for your needs.

But don’t forget that a pill alone isn’t a solution. You need to use it as a tool to start eating right and exercising so that you can lose weight in a healthy way and keep it off once you’re not taking the pill anymore. Otherwise, you’ll end up right back where you started.

0 # too hard to getlegendarytroy 2011-11-13 07:14
It's way too hard to get these pills. There are so many rules and restrictions to be able to get the actual prescription and when you actually do get one for your doctor, they're only usable for a month and a half at a time. Then when they're finally working, the laws change and they're too hard to buy online so that they're embarrassing, inconvenient, and expensive to buy at the pharmacy.

I sometimes wonder about what these types of pills are actually doing for your body for the long term. These prescription weight loss drugs are really powerful and when you consider the types of side effects (and regular effects) they have, I have to think that in the long term, they may have some surprises we've never considered.

Since these are FDA approved, I'm sure they're great in terms of working when the right pill is matched for the right person, but you should work up to these, not start with them. You might be able to diet successfully without going for the big pharmaceuticals and stay in the "milder" nonprescription range.

Prescription diet pills can be very effective, but they should also be taken very seriously. These are serious drugs that can have positive results but that can also have side effects. They're usually meant for people with obesity, not just people who want to look a bit slimmer. It's important to understand the drug very well before you take it so you know what you can expect from it and what side effects could happen.
