The vegetarian, high fiber low fat diet developed by cardiologist Dr. Dean Ornish, is designed to lower cholesterol and undo the damages caused by heart disease. He has a solid reputation in the medical community for success in reversing coronary blockages which had previously been believed possible through only surgery and medications. His findings were first published in the book ‘Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease’. The results were so positive that he later released another book for the general public called ‘Eat More Weigh Less’ and now has a cookbook available on the market with about 250 recipes.
Clinical studies have also shown that as an added bonus his diet plan results in weight loss. Dr. Ornish believes that 10% of our diet should come from fats, 20% from protein and 70% from carbohydrates. The norm in western diet is more like 40% fat, 20% protein and 40% carbs. Combine the Eat More Weight Less Diet with slow moderate exercise (he insists on 30 minutes a day) and a stress management program such as yoga, massage or meditation and you will have a healthy lifestyle diet program that also results in dropping the pounds. This style of eating can be quite restrictive as it calls for the sacrifice of not eating meats, dairy and alcohol.
