Proactol is made from a cactus species known as Opuntia ficus-indica, or Prickly Pear. Eaten as a main food staple in arid parts of the world, Prickly pear is becoming a popular food choice in North American society as well because of its noted ability to lower blood glucose levels. There are a number of clinical studies that have shown that ingestion of prickly pear can significantly lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and improve overall health because of its antioxidant properties.

Opuntia focus-indica, the primary ingredient in Proactol diet pills, is rich in fiber. Not only does the fiber aid in appetite suppression, but these fibers are said to have the ability to capture sugars and fats before they are digested.

Proactol and Weight Loss – Does Proactol Work?

After pouring through many published research papers about Opuntia ficus-indica it is obvious that this plant has many positive health benefits. I could not find one paper that supports the claim that Proactol will block 28% of fat from being absorbed, but there is evidence that fat absorption is decreased. Of course, Proactol can’t discriminate between good and bad fats, so good fats, such as the omega fatty acids will also be removed.

Proactol claims that you can expect to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week and they encourage that you sign up with Home-WeightLoss.com that provides you with low-fat recipes, fitness instruction, and more. So, one positive thing about Proactol is that they are offering support and information about losing weight instead of just pushing a pill. What I don’t think is great about this pill is that people may be more inclined to cheat on their diets or make poor food choices and just assume that Proactol will stop them from gaining weight. The bottom line with Proactol, as it is with every other weight loss product out there, is if you want to lose weight you will need to combine Proactol with a healthy, low-cal diet and regular exercise. Without diet and exercise you will likely not see any weight loss results, whether or not you are taking Proactol.

For the penny-pinchers out there who really want to see if Opuntia ficus-indica will help you shed the pounds I would suggest that you purchase Prickly Pear extract from a local health store or online herbal store. These extracts can be bought from anywhere between $6 - $20, which will work out to be much cheaper than the $89.95 for a months supply that Proactol is selling for.
