The weight loss Qsymia has to offer is based on its use as an obesity treatment. It is an FDA approved prescription drug for use in treating obesity and helping with the adoption of a calorie-restricted diet to encourage weight loss. It is a brand name medication manufactured by a company called Vivus.

Who Can Benefit from Qsymia Weight Loss?

Weight loss through Qsymia is most commonly prescribed to individuals with obesity.  They must have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.  That said, it can also be prescribed to people who are overweight, not obese, and who have a BMI of 27 or higher if their additional body mass is contributing to a higher risk of certain health conditions such as high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes.

What is Qsymia?

The Qsymia weight loss drug is a combination of two different prescription medications.  The first is phentermine and the second is topiramate.  Phentermine is prescribed as an obesity medication all on its own.  It has been FDA approved for more than half a century.  It works as a sympathomimetic amine that impacts the central nervous system. In that way, it boosts the user’s energy levels and can offer appetite suppression.  This can make it easier for dieters to reduce their caloric intake without suffering from hunger pangs. On the other hand, Topiramate is an antiepileptic medication.

That class of medication is typically prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy.  In this case, combining this medication with Phentermine helps to reduce the user’s sense of hunger.  When a dieter feels fuller, he or she is less likely to overeat.

How Does This Drug Work?

The official Qsymia weight loss website describes the way this medication works in two ways to help overcome obesity. The first is through appetite suppression.  The user feels fuller and is therefore satisfied by a smaller amount of food.  As a result, the user will feel inclined to eat less food in order to satisfy hunger.

The second is that because of the first, dieters consume less food during snack time and mealtime. Studies conducted on Qsymia and its impact on weight loss included the two large drug trials the FDA considered before issuing its approval.  These showed that patients whose BMI was at least 30 at the start and who took the recommended dose of this diet drug lost an average of 10 percent of their body weight after a year of use.  This meant an average of 4 inches around the waist and 24 pounds within that span of time.
