Developed by Dr. David Jenkins, a professor of nutrition at the University of Toronto, the G.I., or glycemic index, measures the speed at which your body breaks down food and converts it to glucose, which is used for energy or stored as fat. When losing weight, it is critical to avoid foods that have a high G.I., because they are digested too quickly by your body. With Rick Gallop’s G.I. Diet you won’t have to calculate the glycemic ratings and calories because he has done that for you, by listing foods in one of three categories: foods to avoid, foods to eat occasionally, and foods that you can eat as much of as you want.

The G.I. or Glycemic Index is a measure of the speed at which the body breaks down carbohydrates and converts them to glucose and transferred to the blood. The higher the Glycemic Index value the faster carbohydrates are digested.

How The Glycemic Index Diet Works

RED LIGHT...YELLOW...AND GREEN LIGHT.... Author Rick Gallop says it can be that easy to win the battle of the belly. Foods are broken down into three color-coded groups. Green light foods include most fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, lean meat, seafood, nuts and certain types of potatoes, pasta and bread.

These sort of product digest more slowly in your system and leave you filling fuller for a longer period time. These are slow release foods and this is what the G.I. index is all about, the slow release foods.

To lose weight Rick recommends sticking to \"green light\" foods or foods with a low glycemic index. Most breads are \"red light,\" but sensible portions of whole grain-whole wheat bread are encourage. Always look for the breads with the highest fiber content, you should have 2 1/2 or 3 grams of fiber per slice. Yellow light foods like cheese, eggs, corn and bananas have a medium G.I. and can be eaten occasionally. Red light foods should be avoided because they digest quickly. This causes the blood sugar levels to surge and crash. Stabilizing blood sugar levels can help to control hunger pains, your mood, even your ability to stay focused. This is a very effective tool for diabetics as it is for controlling cholesterol and high blood pressure. The G.I. diet cam about when Rich Gallop a former president of the heart and stroke foundation in Canada couldn\'t lose his own 20 pounds.

12 other failed diets and one year later he finally lost the weight and cam up with the G.I. diet. His book is selling like hotcakes, which by the way are forbidden, a red light food.
