Diethylpropion is a weight loss tablet that is also known under the generic name Diethylpropion hydrochloride. These tablets are available in 25 mg doses and are only available for oral administration. The rest of the formula consists of non-active ingredients: zinc stearate, talc, providone, tartaric acid, mannitol, lactose monohydrate, and microcrystalline cellulose.

This prescription medication is what is known as a sympathomimetic amine. Its pharmacologic activity functions in a way that can be compared to the prototype drugs called amphetamines, which were used for overcoming obesity. These actions involve the stimulation of the central nervous system so that the blood pressure and heart rate will rise and the result will be the suppression of the appetite. When the appetite is suppressed, it means that the dieter won’t feel as hungry. Therefore, smaller meals will be more satisfying, and there won’t be as great a need for snacking.

Diethylpropion Weight Loss Effect

This class of anti-obesity drugs are also sometimes called anorexigenics or anorectics. Though it is believed that the appetite suppression is the main reason that they help obesity patients to lose weight, this has not yet been clinically proven. There may be other metabolic effects or central nervous systems involved in the results that are achieved through the use of Diethylpropion. Clinical trials have shown that without continuing a healthy diet and exercise routine, the effects of this drug are only short-term.

Diethylpropion Prescribing Information

These pills are only prescribed to individuals who are obese, with a body mass index (BMI) that is higher than 30. This is because individuals who are not carrying as much additional weight can experience very powerful and potentially dangerous side effects through the use of the drug.

This medication is not intended to be used over the long-term. Instead, it will only be prescribed for a few weeks at a time before the use is ceased or a break is required before it is started once more. This helps to stop the body from becoming tolerant to the effects of the drug, and to avoid very unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when it comes time to stop taking the pills.

If the body starts to build a tolerance to Diethylpropion, increasing the dose will not make it more effective, but will increase the risk of serious side effects that could potentially be life threatening.

For this same reasons, the prescribing doctor’s directions should be carefully followed to ensure that the proper amount is taken with the right timing and for the correct term.
